Hochschule Konstanz (HTWG) is located in the southernmost part of the Federal Republic of Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The HTWG campus is situated along the bank of the Rhine River, close to the historic center of the city of Konstanz. It emerged from the Higher Technical Institute for Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering, which was founded in 1906 through a private initiative.
In order to create a unified system of higher education in Europe, Bachelors and Masters Degree programs are now being introduced in Germany displacing the German University Diplom degree, which corresponds to the (professional) Masters level. Therefore, the HTWG changed exclusively to Bachelors and Masters Programs in Architecture, Design, Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration and Applied Language Studies.
The 3,800 full-time students at the HTWG are taught and supervised by 150 full-time professors. There are also 100 qualified instructors whose main employment is in industry or administration and who lecture in courses relating to their professional expertise. A staff of 230 support teaching and research in the laboratories, in administration and other central services.
Currently the HTWG has formal partnerships, and student and staff exchange programs, with 47 institutions of higher education in 26 different countries. Students from either side of an exchange can spend a semester or more at the partner institution, taking classes or completing an internship.
Hochschule Konstanz is an important resource for Baden-Württemberg and the whole Lake Constance region, by virtue of its technical and educational facilities. Among these are: the library, the computer center, the Institute for International Students, the Official Testing Center for Building Materials and Geotechnology, the training center of the German Welding Association, the CAD/CAM Institute, the CIM and SAP working groups, the Center for International Terminology and Applied Linguistics, the Institute for Intercultural Management, Values and Communication (KIeM), the Coordination Point for Administrative Data Processing, a number of technology transfer centers and the HTWG’s own Institutes for Applied Research and Continuing Education as well as the Lake Constance Business School.
