  • What are the requirements for studying in Germany?

    Yes, you need school leaving certificates from your home country in order to gain access to a university in Germany. You also have to pass a German language exam.

    In Germany you can study at Universities of Applied Sciences ("Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften" or "Fachhochschulen") and Universities ("Universitäten").

    The bachelor's programs at Universities of Applied Sciences last 6 - 8 semesters. They usually include a one semester internship. Graduates are popular with employers and the level of education is high. Therefore, the degree programs at the Universities of Applied Sciences are also very popular internationally.

    Note: EU-citizens who wish to enroll at the Universities of Applied Sciences Pforzheim, Karlsruhe or Ravensburg-Weingarten apply directly to these universities.

    If you wish to enroll at a university ("Universität") in Germany, you must apply to the international office of the University.

  • Will I be admitted to a degree course?

    About 8-10% of all places at Universities of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg are reserved for non-EU citizens. For EU-citizens, application procedures are the same as for German applicants.

    You are admitted to university according to your overall average. Because of the fees in Baden-Württemberg, chances for international students of being admitted are very good.

  • Which documents are required by the Studienkolleg to validate my records?

    You can apply for recognition of your qualifications after you have received your certificates from your school/university in your home country. However, you can submit the language certificate at a later stage.

  • Can I take Studienkolleg Admission Test abroad?

    The Studienkolleg Admission Test takes place at the HTWG Konstanz University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz and also abroad.

    If you want to take the Studienkolleg Admission Test in your home country, please send your completed application first. If you receive our admission to the Studienkolleg Admission Test and are unable to come to Konstanz, we will try to organize the test in your home country. Please inform us as soon as possible, i.e. 3-4 weeks prior to the test: studienkolleg(at)htwg-konstanz.de.

  • I passed the required exams. What is the next step?

    The Studienkolleg cannot admit students to degree courses. The Studienkolleg validates the certificates, you will need, when applying to a Unitversity of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg.

    You will need a validation of your certificates by the Studienkolleg along with a financial report to apply for a student visa at a German embassy abroad or to renew your visa at an immigration office in Germany. Validation of your certificates by the Studienkolleg is a prerequisite for application to Universities of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg. Deadlines for your application for recognition here are May 1st and Nov 1st of each year. Deadlines your application for application for degree courses at Universities of Applied Sciences are usually January 15th and July 15th of each year.

    If you have already passed the DSH-2, TestDaF (4,0), Goethe C2 certificate or the Studienkolleg Final Exam ("Feststellungsprüfung"), you can submit these certificates any time to the Studienkolleg for validation, along with the certificates from your home country. In this case, please write "Direktbewerber" on the envelope.

  • Do I have to pay tuition fees?

    International students at universities in Baden-Württemberg have to pay tuition fees of 1,500 EUR per semester (plus an administration fee of about 150 EUR). Please apply only to our Studienkolleg - Center for International Students, if you also want to study in Baden-Württemberg and you are prepared to pay tuition fees.

    The following groups are exempted from the tuition fees: students with a German passport, students with a German "Abitur", students with a passport from an EU country, recognized refugees.

  • Do I have to study in Baden-Württemberg after completing the Studienkolleg Konstanz?

    Moving to a different federal state of Germany is possible, but in practice, you may encounter difficulties. Reasons: You will obtain the certificate from the Studienkolleg (for example, after the winter semester) only after the application deadline has expired. At the Universities of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg, the certificate of the Studienkolleg Final Exam ("Feststellungsprüfungszeugnis") can be submitted at a later date, but not at other universities. This means: you may have to study in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg (and pay tuition fees).
