    Alle Veranstaltungen beginnen in der 2. Vorlesungswoche und schließen mit Prüfungen ab. Kursteilnehmer müssen sich im Prüfungsamt zur Prüfung anmelden (siehe Prüfungsnummer in Klammern). Die Studien- und Prüfungsordnungen der einzelnen Fakultäten informieren Sie über die Anerkennung der Sprachkurse als Studium Generale, Wahlpflicht-, oder Zusatzfach. Eine Voranmeldung ist nur für die Kurse in Spanisch erforderlich, und zwar über die Lernplattform Moodle. Änderungen vorbehalten. Es gibt 3 ECTS Punkte für Kurse mit 2 sws, und 6 ECTS Punkte für Kurse mit 4 sws in den Bachelor Studiengängen. Die Master Studiengänge haben individuelle Umrechnungsfaktoren – bitte beim Studiengangleiter erfragen.

    1. A1-B2 Selbstlernkurse (2 ECTS). Falls Du Dich für die chinesische Sprache und Kultur interessierst, solltest Du mehr darüber lernen. Außerdem solltest Du wissen, dass sich die chinesische Sprache und Kultur in Taiwan(R.O.C.), Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR und anderen chinesisch-sprachigen Gegenden unterscheidet.
      Ich heiße Yunxin Yang (Angelina Schmidhuber) und komme aus Nanjing im östlichen China. Mit meinem Abschluss in „Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language“ der Universität Beijing für Sprache und Kultur habe ich bereits mehrere Jahre Lehrerfahrung in China und Deutschland.     2. A2/B1 Tech Talk, 2sws, is a course for people who need both general English and English for technical jobs. It is also suitable as a revision course for students of engineering who had little English at school. The main emphasis is on speaking and listening skills including technical language at an elementary level. Starts October 10. Taught by Christina Schäfer. Wed 11:30 in M005.
    3. B1/B2/C1 English in Action, 2sws. Looking for a different sort of language course? One where you can get up, move and communicate verbally and non-verbally? Practice flexibility and creativity and improve your English in an (inter-)active and fun way. We will start with improvisation games and exercises that will help you to become more confident talking in English.  We will try out different methods for creating scenes – e.g. from pictures, poems, newspaper articles. There will be a public performance at the end of the semester and you will pick some of those scenes and work on perfecting them for this show.  In this course you will practice speaking fluently and spontaneously, in small groups and in front of a group, we will also work on pronunciation and speaking loud enough – things you can certainly use for your next class presentation.     4. B2 People Skills, 2sws. Online course.The aim is to learn about people skills and develop your own people skills by improving your self-competence and your language and communication skills. You will study selected video-, audio-, and text materials, do quizzes and exercises related to the topic, keep a learning journal and discuss your findings in the online learning forum of the course.     6. B2/C1 This is Germany. 2 sws. This course is designed to give an overview of the most important political, geographical, cultural and social developments of modern Germany.   • Architektur

    Professional English for students of architecture

    Course Aim and Content

    In this course we will develop and practice language and communi­cation skills in the context of archi­tecture-related topics. The course comprises two main units: Presenta­tions and Socializing. In the pres­entations unit you will be intro­duced to different aspects of presentations and we will practice techniques for effec­tive presentations. In the social­izing unit we will study video exam­ples of socializing situations and prac­tise such situations in role plays. Further elements of the course are the discussion of architecture-re­lated topics.

    E-learning Component

    In order to prepare for the lessons and as follow-up work you will be required to complete online assignments and submit learning results in learning forum of the course. For these activities we use the HTWG’s learning platform Moodle. On this platform you will also receive feedback on your assignments, reports and other learning acti­vities, and you will be informed about course events and dates.

    The e-learning component will make up about 50% of the course work.

    All course materials can be accessed and downloaded from HTWG Moodle.

    Requirements for a grade

    Due to the structure of the course and its emphasis on teamwork regular attendance is required. You will need to devote some time (up to 90 minutes per week) to work on the e-learning platform outside the classroom.The final grade will be based on the following:

    • A short presentation (5 minutes) about an information technology related topic (50%)
    • Online assignments on the Moodle learning platform, which must be submitted by the required dates. (50%)

  • Bauingenieurwesen

    BIB1/WIB1 – Konsolidierung der Grundlagen - Englisch – 2SWS

    This course is designed to provide first semester civil engineering (BIB) and industrial engineering (WIM) students with a revision and consolidation of basic grammatical structures in English. Students also learn and practice the necessary vocabulary, phrases and language skills required to carry out successful greetings and introductions, small talk, and telephoning in professional situations. In addition, technical English terminology and phrases for the construction industry as well as the appropriate language skills required to hold discussions, make suggestions, give advice and solve problems on a building site are introduced and practiced. Regular attendance and completion of the assigned tasks are strongly recommended.

    Assessment:  60-minute written examination/66%  = Pass

    Englisch BIB2/WIB2: Technical English Communication

    Course objective:

    The goal of this class is to learn to communicate on B2 level within the field of Civil Engineering in written (technical documents) and oral form (trouble shooting, tasks of Civil engineers, progress on the construction site, a professional presentation on a bridge or building). You will read texts about forces, materials and inventions. In preparing for your final presentation, you will listen to a presentation of a professor in engineering about earthquake resistance in construction.

    Assessment: short vocabulary test (20 % of your grade), final, freely held 15 –minute presentation about a bridge or building (80 % of your final grade)

    WIB4 Business English

    URB 1 - English Communication – 2SWS

    Content:
    Student practice discussing a variety of technologies relevant to their field of study, e.g. urban water supply, conventional  vs. renewable sources of energy, recycling.  Students also learn and practice the necessary vocabulary, phrases and language skills required to talk about technology in use, materials technology and technical problems.  Students should have a strong B1 or low B2 level of general English proficiency. Regular attendance and completion of the assigned tasks are strongly recommended.

    Assessment:  Short tests during the semester account for 40% and an exam of spoken technical English for 60% of the final grade.

     

  • Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik

    EIB2: Technisches Englisch

    This course is designed to provide students with the essential technical English language skills for electrical engineering students and professionals. Students are expected to show command of English grammar, language skills and appropriate technical vocabulary at a B2 level. The course focuses on all 4 language skill areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as engineering topics such as electrical components, circuit diagrams, renewable energy, PLCs, etc. Regular attendance is necessary as the most important communication practice takes place in the classroom. English language proficiency is assessed in a 90-minute written exam.

The course focuses on all 4 language skill areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as engineering topics such as structural forces, engineering materials/properties, describing mechanisms/processes, renewable energy sources, etc. Regular attendance is necessary as the most important communication practice takes place in the classroom.     MMS1: Technisches Englisch 3 (Fremdsprache 1 Verhandlungsniveau)

    This course is designed to provide students with the essential language skills required to successfully carry out a sales negotiation in English in a professional business setting. Students are expected to show command of English grammar and appropriate business vocabulary and phrases at a B2 level. The course focuses on 4 areas of oral communication: telephoning, introductions, small talk and negotiating. Regular attendance is necessary as the most important communication practice takes place in the classroom and language lab. English language proficiency is assessed in a 20-minute oral examination.

     

    WIM3: Verhandlungsenglisch

    This course is designed to provide students with the essential language skills required to successfully carry out a sales negotiation in English in a professional business setting. Every week a different topic of engineering will give you the opportunity to practice essential vocabulary and grammar. The exam will be a 90-minute written exam, which will be a mixture of the topics and exercises done in class during the semester. So regular attendance is highly recommended!

    Business English Fast Track (BWL1)

    Aim of the course

    Provide students who do not have an adequate background the opportunity to improve their English so they can follow Business English 1 in their second semester successfully.

    Activities

    Review of English grammar, vocabulary development, writing and speaking exercises. Im Mittelpunkt steht die systematische Entwicklung aller vier Sprachfertigkeiten sowie eine gezielte Wiederholung der Grundlagen der englischen Grammatik. Eine praxisbezogene Einführung in den Fachwortschatz des Wirtschaftsenglisches wird angeboten, um Studierenden an die Themen, die ausführlich im 2. Semester behandelt werden, heranzuführen. Typische Aufgaben des Arbeitslebens, wie z.B. geschäftlicher Umgang per Telefon, E-Mail oder Brief, werden behandelt und geübt.

    Business English II (BWB 3)

    This course is taught in English.

    Prerequisites See content of ENG1, or: Good ability to use English in speaking and writing; experience in telephoning and doing presentations; knowledge of basic Business English vocabulary.

    Aim of the course
    This course is designed to help students develop confidence and proficiency in discussing a wide variety of topics in different situations. Students are expected to participate actively in class, taking part in group and pair work which aims at consolidating and extending the students' knowledge of English by practising all four language skills. In addition to practising key business vocabulary and idioms, the main emphasis is put on developing the students' communicative skills. The participants practise presenting business related topics and dealing with customer complaints focusing on the active use of business vocabulary, correct grammar and public speaking ability as well as participating fluently and appropriately in business related discussions.

    Coursebook
    The course is based on "Business Proficiency" published by Klett. We will cover the first half of the book.

    Methods
    In this course, English is our language of preference, which means that students are expected to speak English at all times, including dealing with administrative questions.     Business English III (BWB4)

    Prerequisites
    See content of BUS ENG2, or: Good ability to use English in speaking and writing; experience in doing presentations; professional telephoning skills, basic socializing skills; good knowledge of Business English vocabulary.

    Aim of the course
    This course is designed to help students develop confidence and proficiency in discussing complex topics in different situations. Students are expected to participate actively in class, taking part in group and pair work which aims at consolidating and extending the students' knowledge of English by practising all four language skills. In addition to practising specialized business vocabulary, the main emphasis will be put on developing the students' communicative skills. The participants practise participating fluently and appropriately in business related discussions and negotiations while focusing on the active use of business vocabulary, correct grammar and public speaking ability.  Also, formal writing is learned.

    Coursebook
    The course is based on "Business Proficiency" published by Klett. We will cover the second half of the book.

    Methods
    In this course, English is our language of preference, which means that students are expected to speak English at all times, including dealing with administrative questions.     Exam
    30-minute spoken exam in pairs. Students are assessed at the end of the semester in an oral exam in which they demonstrate – in pairs – their ability to socialize in a professional environment, discuss a controversial issue with a business partner, and give an ad hoc short presentation on a business related topic. In this exam, fluency, accuracy, professional conduct, and the active use of Business English vocabulary are the main criteria for assessment.

    WRB 3 – Business English 4SWS

    Instructors: Hyacinth Moodalie-Hünnemeyer, Janice Scott

    This course is designed to help students develop confidence and proficiency in discussing a wide variety of business topics in different situations. Students are expected to participate actively in class, taking part in group and pair work which aims at consolidating and extending their knowledge of English by practising all four language skills. The main emphasis is put on developing the students' communicative skills. The participants practise presenting business related topics focusing on the active use of business vocabulary, collocations and idioms, correct grammar and public speaking ability as well as participating fluently and appropriately in business related discussions.  The course is based on Career Express C1, Cornelsen 2011. Additional materials in the form of handouts or uploaded documents on Moodle will be provided.

    Assessment

    Students are assessed at the end of the semester in an oral exam in which they demonstrate – in pairs – their ability to conduct small talk, complete a collaborative task, and give a short presentation on a business related topic covered in class. In this exam, fluency, accuracy, professional conduct, and the active use of Business English vocabulary are the main criteria.

    English/ Upper Intermediate: B2 level – 4SWS

    This two semester “EAP,”/ English for Academic Purposes course is designed  to improve the general and academic language proficiency  of  STK „Wirtschaft“ and „Technik“ students.  The course is based on the coursebook, “Oxford EAP – Upper Intermediate/B2” OUP, 2012 and focuses on preparing students for tertiary academic study by exploiting all four skills areas.  In particular, students work at improving their:

    • understanding of grammar
    • academic and general vocabulary
    • reading strategies for academic texts
    • presentation skills for university/college
    • oral communication to participate effectively in seminars and in general.
    • listening comprehension for lectures
    • (business/general writing skills: emails, letters)
    • academic writing skills/essays, reports, summaries

     

    Assessment: mid-term examination, oral presentation, writing tasks, regular attendance and active participation.
