    Exams

    General information and FAQs

    • Do I have to register for the examinations myself?

In principle, you will be automatically registered for all compulsory examinations, including any resits, and for all scheduled examinations, i.e. you do not need to do anything yourself.

However, in the following cases, you must register for the examination yourself, either online or at the Central Examination Office:

      • Examinations in subjects of the Studium Generale or courses from the HTWG's range of foreign language options
      • Examinations that you would like to take ahead of schedule from a higher semester (after approval by the chair of the examination board)
      • Exams in the compulsory elective subjects in the sixth and seventh semesters (BWB6 and BWB7)
      • Voluntary exams during the practical semester

    • Can I withdraw from an examination?

In the first semester, it is not possible to withdraw from an examination, as all examinations are scheduled. From the second semester onwards, you can withdraw from unscheduled examinations, but still not from scheduled ones. Withdrawal from an unscheduled examination is only possible once. Exceptions may be made for subjects in the Studium Generale or the foreign language elective programme.

There are two common procedures for withdrawing from an unscheduled examination:

      • Online withdrawal via the student portal ("De-register" in your grade account):
The online de-registration procedure is only available within a specified time window. The current dates and further information can be found on the Central Examination Office website.
      • Withdrawal using the form “Withdrawal from non-scheduled examinations”:
The form must be submitted to the BW degree programme before the examination date. In the case of a written examination, it can be handed to the examiner immediately before the start of the examination.
    • What is a scheduled test?

You cannot withdraw from a scheduled examination, i.e. you must take the examination on the first examination date. The following examinations are scheduled:

      • all examinations in the first semester, the so-called “assessment semester”
      • the examination in the “Business English I” module in the second semester
      • all repeat examinations that you did not pass on your first attempt
      • all examinations that you have previously withdrawn from once
    • What should I do if I am ill on the day of the examination?

If you are unable to take an examination (whether scheduled or unscheduled) due to illness, you must provide proof of this in the form of a medical certificate. A certificate from a specialist doctor must be submitted for this purpose. The certificate of incapacity to take the examination, completed and signed by you and your doctor, must be submitted to the BW degree programme immediately, at the latest on the next working day after the examination.

A missing or subsequent claim of incapacity to take the examination will not be accepted. In this case, the examination will be considered failed.

    • Can I retake an examination?

You may retake a graded examination that you have failed once. You will be automatically registered for the retake examination on the next possible examination date.

If you fail the examination on your second attempt, you will generally lose your right to take the examination. A second repeat, i.e. a third attempt, is only possible if you have previously submitted a written application, a hardship application, to the chair of the BW examination board and the application has been approved.

However, if you fail the exam on your second retake, i.e. your third attempt, you will no longer be able to continue your bachelor's degree in business administration. You will be de-registered due to your final failure to pass an exam.

    • Where can I find the examination regulations lists (PO lists)?

The examination regulations lists or PO lists contain the official examination names and examination numbers for the current semester.

    • What does exceeding the deadline mean?

You must complete your basic studies after no more than four semesters. All graded module (partial) examinations and all ungraded performance assessments ("certificates") from the first two semesters of the Bachelor's programme in Business Administration must be completed within this period. An extension of this deadline is only possible upon written, well-founded request to the chair of the BW examination board.

The same applies to the entire Bachelor's programme: if you are unable to submit the required examination results and performance certificates after completing the tenth semester, you must submit a written, well-reasoned application for an extension of the deadline and thus an extension of your study period to the chair of the BW examination board.

    • How do I apply for hardship relief?

Whether you are requesting a repeat examination or an extension of the deadline for your bachelor's degree programme, you must always submit a written, well-reasoned application (hardship application) to the chair of the BW examination board. The application is informal and freely worded and must be submitted within the deadlines announced on the notice board.

Your application must contain a coherent explanation of why you were unable to pass your examination or complete your basic studies or the entire Bachelor's programme within the specified period.

These must be reasons you are not responsible for, e.g. your own illness, caring for a sick relative, pregnancy and maternity leave. Participation in the self-administration of the HTWG is also included, as is the non-availability or cancellation of a course that would have enabled you to complete your (basic) studies within the specified period.

    • What does downgrading mean?

If you have a maximum of two examinations from the basic study period outstanding, you will still be admitted to the main study period and automatically placed in the third semester. However, if you have more than two outstanding examinations from your basic studies, you will remain in the basic studies and will be downgraded from the third to the second semester in the first weeks of the new semester – provided that the four-semester deadline for completing the basic studies is not exceeded. The downgrading is automatic, as is the registration for the outstanding examinations.

In the advanced study period, voluntary downgrading to the last semester completed is possible upon request. The prerequisite for this is that you still have at least four examinations remaining. You must submit the completed application for downgrading to the BW programme office. Once the application has been approved by the chair of the BW examination board, it will be forwarded to the student department, where the changed and approved classification will be made.

    • Are examination credits earned elsewhere transferable?

Examination results that you have achieved at another university or abroad as part of an economics degree can generally be credited. To do so, you must submit a written application with the relevant transcripts. The following documents must be submitted in full and electronically to the BW programme office for the examination and recognition of your application:

      • Transcript of grades or individual transcript
      • Course descriptions
      • Application for recognition of academic and examination achievements – to be submitted within three months of enrolment
      • Data sheet for recording your stay abroad for examination achievements completed while studying abroad

The BW Examination Board will check whether the skills you have acquired are appropriate and comparable in terms of content, scope and requirements. If the decision is positive, your documents will be forwarded to the Central Examination Office for recording.

Further information and forms on the subject of ‘recognition’ can be found on the website of the Central Examination Office.

Cooperation with the University of Konstanz

Since 2011, there has been a cooperation between HTWG Konstanz and the University of Konstanz regarding mutual participation in courses and the recognition of examination and study achievements.

It is best to seek detailed advice from the BW programme office in advance to ensure that there are no obstacles to the recognition of your achievements.
