    English / Lower Intermediate: B1 Level- 4SWS

    This course is designed to help STK students with lower level English skills reach a solid B1 level of English proficiency. The textbook used as the basis for the course is Technical English at Work and it covers both technical and business topics. All of the skill areas (speaking/listening/reading/writing) are engaged and practiced with an emphasis on grammar revision and vocabulary building.

    The course starts with a review of the language that should have already been learned:  nouns (singular/plural), pronouns, simple present/past tenses, adjectives/adverbs, etc.

    More difficult language is then presented in the second semester: present perfect & future tenses, much/many, comparatives/superlatives, passive tenses, if-sentences, etc.

    Other skill/topic areas covered in the course: introductions/small talk, cover letter/CV, telephoning, mathematics vocabulary, describing graphs, presentations, etc.

    Assessment: mid-term & final examinations, regular attendance/active participation and oral presentation

    English/ Upper Intermediate: B2 level – 4SWS

    This two semester “EAP,”/ English for Academic Purposes course is designed to improve the general and academic language proficiency of SK „Wirtschaft“ and „Technik“ students. The course is based on the coursebook, “Oxford EAP – Upper Intermediate/B2” OUP, 2012 and focuses on preparing students for tertiary academic study by exploiting all four skills areas. In particular, students work at improving their:

    • understanding of grammar
    • academic and general vocabulary
    • reading strategies for academic texts
    • presentation skills for university/college
    • oral communication to participate effectively in seminars and in general.
    • listening comprehension for lectures
    • academic writing skills/essays, and summaries
       

    Assessment: examination, oral presentation / project work / debate, writing tasks, regular attendance and active participation.

    Business English 2 in BWB3,     2sws

    This course aims at improving students’ writing skills, both for academic purposes and selected business purposes.

    Students will be introduced to different text types (article summary, review, essay, letter of application, minutes, project report/ case study reports) and will review a variety of language points and elements of style to help improve writing.

    In order to pass this course, students should demonstrate a B2 level of proficiency of English in a business context, and must attend class, constructively participate, and submit all assignments.

    This course is based on newspaper or magazine articles, scientific articles that students bring to class, and additional materials posted on moodle.

    Business English 3 in BWB4,     4sws

    Instructor: Sharon Zaharka

    This course is designed to improve spoken business English by reading articles and developing vocabulary in business related areas.

    We will cover six different topics (economics, products and brands, marketing, manufacturing, human resources, quality), with a starter text from me, and follow-up articles supplied by students the following week. We will review these materials, do vocabulary work with them, but also practice important business communications skills, such as: small talk, phone calls, meetings, presentations.
    Vocabulary quizzes will be offered and students may give one 5-minute presentation (on a company or economy). The final exam counts 80%: First students must make some small talk as they meet their business partner at a point of arrival (train station, airport, etc.), and then they will conduct strategy meetings to discuss changes and challenges of the business environment with reference to their company.


    WRB 2 – Business English 1, 2SWS

    This course will help students develop confidence and proficiency in discussing a wide variety of business topics in different situations. In class students are expected to participate actively in group and pair work aimed at consolidating and extending their knowledge of English by practicing all four language skills. The main emphasis is put on developing the students' communicative skills. The participants practice presenting business related topics and participating in business related discussions by focusing on the active use of business vocabulary, collocations, idioms, correct grammar and appropriate functional language phrases. The course is based on Career Express C1, Cornelsen 2011. Additional material is made available on Moodle.

    Assessment includes both coursework and a final exam.

    Coursework: vocabularytests, listening and grammar test, short class presentation. 

    Final examination: Oral exam in pairs in which students demonstrate their ability to conduct polite, professional small talk, complete a business related discussion task, and give a short presentation on a business topic covered in class. In this exam, fluency, clarity, accuracy, professional conduct, and the active use of Business English vocabulary are the main criteria.

     

    WRB3 – Business English 2,  2SWS

    As a follow up to Business English 1, we will reinforce the skills introduced and practiced in semester 2 in this course. Additionally, students will focus on clear and concise reading and writing skills through further reading and listening comprehension activities. They will also become more aware of and improve grammatical accuracy by analysing common errors in both speaking and writing. Business English 2 is also based on Career Express C1, Cornelsen 2011 and supplementary material is made available on Moodle.

    Assessment includes both coursework and a final exam.

    Coursework: vocabulary tests, reading and grammar test, class presentation, graded discussion tasks.

    Final examination: Written examination: a) Reading and listening comprehension tasks. b) Grammar cloze task based on common errors discussed in class.

     

  • Mechanical Engineering

    MAB3: Technical English

    Content of the course

    This course is part of the module “Arbeitstechnik und kommunikative Kompetenz“  together with the course “Project Management”. Both courses are taught in English. The oral exam consists of a presentation of a PM topic and is given by a team of two students. The aim of this course is to help engineering students to increase their knowledge of general technical and specific project management vocabulary and grammar.

    The topics range from job applications, calculating, geometry, materials, renewable energies to project failures.

    You will learn and practice reading and communication skills to enable you to talk and write about a variety of topics.

    MIE1: Technisches Englisch 3 (Fremdsprache 1 Verhandlungsniveau)

    This course is designed to provide students with the essential language skills required to successfully carry out a sales negotiation in English in a professional business setting. Students are expected to show command of English grammar and appropriate business vocabulary and phrases at a B2 level. The course focuses on 4 areas of oral communication: telephoning, introductions, small talk and negotiating. Regular attendance is necessary as the most important communication practice takes place in the classroom and language lab. English language proficiency is assessed in a 20-minute oral examination.
     

    WIM2: Technical Englisch, 2sws (from Ws22)

    Instructor: Ian Howe

    You will learn how to write about and present a technical device in a structured way starting with easy topics then gradually moving to complex ones. We will develop our technical English skills in the topics of technical functions, materials technology, components and assemblies, and technical problems.  There is a written exam at the end of semester, and for the "Schein" students will present their design of a Rube-Goldberg style nonsense machine.

     

    WIM3: Verhandlungsenglisch

  • Electrical engineering and information technology

    KdG Englisch (EIB1/EIW1)

    Instructor:  Jim Paul

    This course is designed to support the technical courses in the EIB/EIW study programs which are conducted in English in subsequent semesters. While all the language skill areas (reading, writing, speaking, listening) are engaged and practiced in the course, listening and reading are particularly stressed. Short technical lectures are given in English to improve listening and note-taking skills. Technical texts are used to improve reading comprehension skills needed for future EIB/EIW courses held in English. Vocabulary is given throughout the semester in support of all topics covered. Other specific areas/skills covered are electric circuits, mathematical equations, software development, technical descriptions, etc.

    Assessment: Two in-class exams (80% of final grade) and classroom performance- participation, homework, etc. (20% of final grade)

  • Civil Engineering

    BIB1 / WIB1: Konsolidierung der Grundlagen – Englisch, 2sws

    Instructor: Hyacinth Moodalie-Hünnemeyer, N.N.

    This course  provides first semester civil engineering (BIB) and business engineering (WIB) students with a revision, consolidation of  basic grammatical structures and development of key language skills (reading, speaking, listening and writing) in English to prepare them for their compulsory English Communication course in the second semester. Students learn and practice the  functional language (phrases) required to carry out discussions, give short presentations  and solve problems in professional and general situations. Technical English terminology and phrases for the construction industry are also introduced. Regular attendance and completion of the assigned tasks are mandatory.

    Assessment: Two short vocabulary tests,
    One reading and listening comprehension test,
    One short group presentation or oral task 

    (60% ) = Pass

     

    BIB2 / WIB2: English Communication, 2sws

    Instructors: Stefanie Giebert, N.N.

    Course objective: The goal of this class is to learn to communicate on B2 level within the field of Civil Engineering in written (technical documents) and oral form (trouble shooting, tasks of Civil engineers, progress on the construction site, a professional presentation on a bridge or building). You will read texts about forces, materials and technical innovations and watch videos on the structural developments for building skyscrapers, bridges, dams, and domes.

    Assessment: two vocabulary tests, reading test final, freely held, short presentation , final oral exam in the form of a dialogue between two students.
     

    URB 1: English Communication, 2sws

    Instructors: Sharon Zaharka, N.N.

    Content: Student practice discussing a variety of technologies relevant to their field of study, e.g. urban water supply, conventional  vs. renewable sources of energy, recycling.  Students also learn and practice the necessary vocabulary, phrases and language skills required to talk about technology in use, materials technology and technical problems.  Students should have a strong B1 or low B2 level of general English proficiency. Regular attendance and completion of the assigned tasks are strongly recommended.

    Assessment:  two vocabulary tests, a reading test, a freely held, short presentation, as well as participation and homework account for 40%. A final oral exam in the form of a dialogue between two students using technical English accounts for 60% of the grade.

     

    URB 1: Konsolidierung der Grundlagen – English, 2sws

    Instructor: Gisela Hindelang

    This course is designed to provide first semester URB students with a revision and consolidation of basic grammatical structures in English. Students will get introduced to and practice key language and skills required to participate in general and professional spoken communication (introductions, small talk, meetings, telephoning) as well as written communication (emailing).

    They will practice presenting topics, leading discussions and solve problems. In addition, they will get acquainted with basic technical English terminology used in the civil engineering sector.

    Assessment is based on regular and active participation, in-class presentations, vocabulary and language tests and written test at the end of term.

  • Architecture

    Professional English for students of Architecture, 2 sws

    Instructor: Ian Howe

    In this course students will design a small building/tiny house and use professional English to present and then write about the project.  The course follows the steps of the Royal Institute of British Architects.  In these steps students will encounter the language of project definition, preliminary design, and structural design.  Students will also learn the skills of effective presentation and writing.
    The course requires outdoor site visits.
