The University of Konstanz is committed to providing employees with caregiving responsibilities with practical and helpful support in balancing their caregiving duties with their careers. For family caregivers, the university offers flexible work schedules; employees have the option to reduce their working hours, and short-term leave from work is also available.
Individual questions are best addressed in a face-to-face conversation. The Family Service Center will be happy to advise you and, if necessary, refer you to additional support and information resources.
Various legal measures are in place to help people balance family, caregiving, and work.
These measures are set forth in the Care Leave Act (German) and the Family Care Leave Act (German).
If you need time to make arrangements for an urgent care situation, you may take up to 10 days off work; you are not required to notify your employer.
During this time, you are entitled to a care support allowance, which you can apply for through your relative’s long-term care insurance.

Employees may take a partial or full leave of absence from work for up to six months if they are caring for a close family member at home.

Legal entitlement to partial leave of up to 24 months, as well as to an interest-free loan. The minimum working hours are 15 hours per week; the required minimum working hours must be worked on average over the course of a year. The schedule and distribution of hours can be arranged according to the employee’s needs. An interest-free loan may be applied for to cover living expenses.

To support family members during the final stages of life, employees may take a full or partial leave of absence from work for up to three months. The family member does not have to be receiving care at home. No care level classification is required. An interest-free loan to cover living expenses is available.
