Studying with Care Responsibilities
The University of Konstanz strives to provide students with caregiving responsibilities with practical and helpful support in organizing their studies. Individual questions about your studies and balancing your academic commitments with caregiving are best addressed in a one-on-one conversation. The Family Service Center will be happy to advise you and, if necessary, refer you to other support and information resources.

Curriculum
To enable students with caregiving responsibilities to fulfill their family obligations, the University of Konstanz offers them a personalized study plan. To do so, the student must draw up a binding study plan and have it approved by the dean of studies or the chair of the examination committee for the respective degree program (see § 3, para. 5a SPOBa).

Leave of Absence
Students who are caring for a close relative as defined in Section § 7 Abs. 3 of the Care Leave Act may take a leave of absence. Unlike during a regular semester of leave, they may be exempted from the requirement to pursue their studies in good standing, but still have the option to attend courses and complete coursework and exams. You can apply for this type of leave of absence as early as your first semester. To apply, you will need a copy of the official notice confirming and classifying your need for long-term care, as well as a written statement from the civil registry regarding your family relationship (issued by the civil registry office).
What should you keep in mind when taking a leave of absence?
Student leaves of absence are governed by Section 7 of the University of Konstanz’s Admission and Enrollment Regulations. A request for a leave of absence must be submitted to the Student Affairs Office, stating the reason for the leave and providing the appropriate supporting documentation. Please use the leave of absence application form for this purpose. A leave of absence is valid for one semester at a time and must be reapplied for each subsequent semester.
Please note that students on leave of absence are not eligible for BAföG. However, it is possible to apply for Bürgergeld for the duration of the leave of absence.
