During the leave of absence, your status changes
During this time, you can use the library and the computer center, but you cannot take classes at the HTWG Konstanz or use other campus services.

This page is intended for all current HTWG Konstanz students. Here you can find answers to a wide range of practical and bureaucratic questions – ranging from your student ID and tuition fees to your internship semester.
Leave of Absence
Students can request to take a leave of absence from their studies according to § 61 of the Landeshochschulgesetz in conjunction with § 7 of the admissions and enrollment rules of the HTWG Konstanz (ZIO). The absence must cover a large part of the semester (at least 3.5 months) and the reason for it must be documented.
A leave of absence semester does not count as part of the length of your studies and is not related to exam deadlines.
These are the most common reasons for a leave of absence:
- Studying abroad (except if part of the Study and Exam Regulations);
Document this with an enrollment form from the international university that covers at least 3.5 months
- Professional work experience connected to your studies (except if part of the Study and Exam Regulations). For bachelor’s students, this is only valid after completing the intermediate exam
Document this with a copy of your work contract that covers at least 3.5 months
- Due to an illness that hinders you from continuing your studies
Document this with a doctor’s note that includes the estimated duration of the illness and describes the symptoms
- If you’re having a child and/or will be taking care of a child
You can document this with a copy of the “mother passport” or a doctor’s note with expected birth date or a copy of the birth certificate
- If caring for a family member
Document this with a copy of the level of care required for this family member and information about your relation to the person.
It is normally not possible to take a leave of absence during your first semester.
Exceptions:
- If you’re having a child and/or will be taking care of a child
- Taking care of a child under five years
- Caring for a relative
Applying for a Leave of Absence
Your request for a leave of absence should be submitted to the registrar's office before the start of the upcoming semester.
In case of an event (such as a serious illness) that occurs during the semester, please submit your request as soon as possible.
- A statement from your department is necessary for reasons 1. and 2. listed above. This needs to be submitted before your request. In the case of an internship, the head of the internship office needs to write that the “leave of absence is accepted” on the internship contract.
- Log on to the Campus-Portal
- Under "Service" > "Anträge”, select "leave of absence" and enter your data.
- Normally a leave of absence is provided for one semester. However, you can request an additional semester if there is an important reason.
- Download the signed documents to the campus portal.
- Even during a leave of absence, you will need to pay the semester fees and re-register
