    Tuition Costs

    This page provides an overview of the costs of studying at the HTWG Konstanz. You’ll find information about who needs to pay tuition costs, the obligatory student fees, and how to apply for refunds.

    Most international students who choose to study at the HTWG Konstanz are exempt from tuition. This includes students from:

    • The European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA)
    • HTWG Konstanz partner colleges and dual degree programs,
    • Students of all nationalities who completed their high school degrees (Abitur) in Germany but do not have German citizenship
    • Refugee students

    All other international students in Baden-Württemberg are currently required to pay a tuition of 1,500 Euro per semester.

    Steps to Claim Tuition Exemption

    1. Are you an applicant from outside the European Union/ European Economic Area (EEA)
    2. When you submit your application for the HTWG, please also fill out the form assessing tuition status (below) and submit the following: a copy of your passport or temporary passport, official certification, and residency permit) to the registrar's office.

    3. You need to submit notarized copies and the form above when you apply or prior to your enrollment. 
    4. To apply for tuition exemption, please fill out and sign the following form and submit it along with any necessary verification to the HTWG Konstanz registrar's office before the start of classes.

    5. We will notify you if you have been exempted from tuition.
    6. If you are required to pay tuition, please follow the instructions for paying the tuition for your re-registration.
    • International students exempt from paying tuition

      The following international students are exempt from paying tuition at the HTWG Konstanz:

      • Citizens of European Union countries
      • Citizens of countries in the European Economic Area
      • If you have completed your secondary studies (entitling you to study at the university level) in Germany
      • If you were enrolled in a Studienkolleg preparatory course in Baden-Württemberg prior to the winter semester 2017/2018, you are not required to pay tuition in the degree program you select immediately after completing your Feststellungsprüfung exam.
      • Swiss citizens as well as their spouses / life partners or children, that can verify that they are employed in Germany
      • The spouses / life partners or children of a European Union or European Economic Area country with certain stipulations. Please contact us for more information.
      • If you have a settlement permit or an EU permanent residence permit in accordance with the Residence Act (AufenthG)
      • If your normal residence is in Germany and are recognized outside the Federal Republic of Germany as a refugee within the meaning of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees of 28 July 1951 (Federal Law Gazette II 1953 p. 559, 560) and are entitled to reside in the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany on a more than temporary basis
      • If you are a permanent resident in Germany and have a residence permit pursuant to Sections 22, 23 (1), (2) or (4), Sections 23a, 25 (1) or (2), Sections 25a, 25b, 28, 37, 38 (1) sentence 1 no. 2 or Section 104a AufenthG or a residence permit pursuant to Sections 30 or 32 to 34 AufenthG as the spouse/life partner or child of a foreigner with a settlement permit
      • If you are a permanent resident in Germany and have a residence permit in accordance with Section 25 (3) or (4) sentence 2 or (5) or Section 31 AufenthG or a residence permit in accordance with Sections 30 or 32 to 34 AufenthG as the spouse/life partner or child of a foreigner with a residence permit and have resided in Germany legally, permitted or tolerated for at least 15 months without interruption
      • If you have lived in Germany for five years and have been gainfully employed during this time
      • If at least one of your parents has lived and worked for at least three years over the past six years prior to your studies
      • If you are considered a homeless foreigner in Germany
      • Tolerated foreigners (Section 60a AufenthG) who have their permanent residence in Germany and have been residing legally, permitted or tolerated in Germany for at least 15 months without interruption; Section 18a (1) no. 7 AufenthG applies accordingly.
      • If you are enrolled under agreements that guarantee exemption from charges If you have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree program or a state examination or diploma degree program in Germany, you are required to pay second degree tuition.
    • Who is eligible to request a tuition exemption?
      • International students during a leave of absence, if the request for a leave of absence is submitted before the start of the semester
      • International students who are participating in an internship semester according to § 29 Abs. 3 S. 2 Landeshochschulgesetz
      • International students with a residence permit in accordance with Section 55 (1) of the Asylum Act who are nationals of a country of origin that has been assessed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees with a protection rate of 50 percent or more based on the announcement of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (Eritrea, Syria and Somalia – as of July 1, 2021)
      • International students with a disability that makes studying considerably more difficult within the meaning of § 2 of the Ninth Book of the German Social Code.

      Please note: You will receive a refund for previously paid tuition fees if your application is accepted prior to the upcoming semester. Please submit the refund form.

    Tuition for Second Degrees

    If you have already completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Germany and wish to pursue a second degree at the HTWG Konstanz, you will be required to pay tuition of € 650 per semester. This is also the case for international students, unless you already have to pay the international student tuition (please see list of exemptions above!).

    Semester Fees

    All HTWG Konstanz students are required to pay semester fees of € 187,50. This includes the following:


    Important: The semester fees must be paid each semester with your enrollment. There is also a new “INTENDED USE” number each semester to use on your bank transfer form when you pay the fees. You can find this number on our website.

    Refunds

    of Tuition and/or Semester Fees for International Students

    • Your tuition and semester fees will be refunded if you deregister (exmatriculate) within one month after classes begin.
    • You will also be exempted if you can verify a legal exception within one month after classes beginn.


    This request must be submitted to the registrar's office within one month after classes begin.

    Please note: You will receive a refund for previously paid tuition fees if your application is accepted prior to the upcoming semester.
