Studying Business Information Systems: Computer Science and Business Adminstration

Where processes in companies or organizations are digitized and where processes are to be optimized economically and technically through IT solutions, that is where Business Information Systems is in demand. This means that the focus is on operational applications, such as in logistics or the energy market. Business Information Systems combines competencies from different disciplines, especially computer science and business administration.

Would you like to analyze, manage, improve and innovate processes or develop suitable software solutions? Are you a communicative person interested in technical and business solutions and processes? Then contribute to shaping your digital future and bring in your ideas!

Good reasons for Business Information Systems

    1. Business Information Systems – the best of IT and business administration

Is "pure computer science" too technical for you? Do you find it fascinating to understand how you can use IT to optimize modern operations / processes in companies, such as in logistics or production? As a Business Information Systems graduate, you will combine the worlds of computer science and business administration. You combine communication, technical and economic understanding as well as organization / management.

    2. High practical relevance and future digitization technologies

Our professors have practical experience and know exactly what is important. They teach you the latest and future-oriented technologies, the implementation of which you practice right away - that motivates!

    3. Individual support

You will study in small practice groups of about 15 students. Support is face-to-face, and your professors and upper-level students will answer your questions quickly and directly.

    4. Excellent career perspectives

In all industries, there is a growing need for professional IT solutions that companies can use to automate and accelerate their processes, such as shipping or sales. Therefore, you have excellent career perspectives and you can contribute to shape future topics.

    5. Study where others spend their vacations

At HTWG Konstanz you study in a prime location: directly on Lake Constance. The university offers you the opportunity to take the sailing license. Within five minutes, you can walk to the old town with its bars. In the winter, you can quickly reach many attractive ski resorts.

Course of studies in Business Information Systems

The program lasts seven semesters (210 ECTS).  The basic lectures in the areas of business information systems and business administration, computer science and mathematics, theory, technology and processes are continued, for example, by topics such as modeling, software development, e-business, IT (project) management and IT security.

In semester five, you will work in a company or institution of your choice (internship semester).

    • Semester 1 & 2

In semesters 1 and 2, you will receive a broad basic education. The focus is on IT systems, mathematics, programming as well as business administration and accounting. The voluntary "preliminary course in mathematics" makes it easier for you to get started. Mathematics is a means to an end for you - for example, it helps you optimize business processes with software.

    • From Semester 3 onwards

From Semester 3 onwards you will dedicate yourself to software development, deepen your mathematical knowledge, work with database and information systems, and gain knowledge in (business process) management and IT project management.

In semester 4, you decide on a specialization of your choice:

      • Business process management
      • Software and system engineering

Semester 5 is a practical study semester (internship) in which you work in a company of your choice. There you practically apply what you have learned from your studies. The company pays you for your work. You get to know your area of responsibility and the professional field and you can already build up your professional network.

The team project (in semester 6) allows you to work out a topic of your choice in a practical way.

The elective courses (semesters 6 and 7) can be arranged individually.

You complete your bachelor degree with a bachelor thesis at the university of applied science or in a cooperation with a company.

You have the possibility to integrate stays abroad into your studies. It is also possible to spend the practical semester (internship) abroad. Comparable study achievements can be recognized after prior approval.

    Specialization paths

Do you want to push forward the digitalization of corporate processes through technically sound business process management or develop suitable software and systems for this purpose? And all this in a practical and application-oriented manner? At the beginning of the 4th semester you have the choice between two specialization paths.

You can obtain detailed information on the different study contents by clicking on the fields of specialization:

    • 1) Business process management

Within the specialization path of business process management, you will acquire special knowledge in the field of analysis, realization and optimization of business processes and for the use of business information systems. A combination of Web 2.0 technologies and Business Process Management (BPM) is required to collectively design and optimize business processes worldwide and implement them into IT systems. For this purpose, you need special software, so-called Business Process Management (BPM) tools, which you will get to know.

In detail, during your training you will acquire knowledge regarding

      • precise methods that can be used to document, model and optimize complex business processes,
      • Standards in modeling and execution of business processes, concepts and procedures of business process management,
      • Application areas of business process management as well as practical experience in project and team work.
    • 2) Software and system engineering

Within the specialization path of software and system engineering, you will deal with current methods and technologies for the development of distributed and web-based software systems.
